New Barista black – smooth enough for James Bond

Were he real, the world’s most celebrated secret agent would now be 100. His creator and many actors who portrayed him over the years may be long gone, but the image of this super smooth spy dude still lives large. Pinotage is also approaching the 100-year mark, so when the folks at Barista decided it’s time to celebrate the upcoming centenary of this truly South African cultivar, they set out creating a wine that would express luxury in the most timeless of fashions. Something 007 would have pushed his martini aside for… Enter new Barista Black.

Grapes for this wine are sourced predominantly from a 20-year-old bush vine vineyard in the Swartland. Fermentation took place in stainless tanks and the wine was then matured for 18 months with 20% of the wine aged in first-fill French barriques.

On the nose you’ll find plums, red currants and baking spice. The palate has a juicy fruit core with velvety tannins and oak complexity. The finish is long, smooth and pleasantly dry. The black bottle design screams urbane sophisticate, making it the ideal gift for that 007 smooth-as-they-come mate celebrating a special occasion. Find it countrywide at grocers and fine wine merchants at around the R150 mark.

About this article: I only write about places and things I actually really like. Should I receive complimentary meals/tickets/diamonds, this will always be revealed. I’m not in the rubbishing business, so if something is not my cup of tea, I’ll simply not write about it (but I’ll keep the diamonds). Therefore this is not so much a review, as a personal recommendation of places and things I like.
